  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS)

Having shared with you in our previous article about Respiratory Allergic Conditions, this week’s article talks about Allergic Reactions to our Intestinal System – Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a condition that is common but hardly linked to an Allergy reaction.

IBS is associated with gastrointestinal disorders that can result in chronic or recurrent abdominal pain, diarrhea, irregular bowel habits and abnormal stool. IBS is also associated with other medical conditions like Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and Dyspepsia (FD).

IBS is common among the younger population, has a morbidity rate of 6.5% and affects women more than men.  IBS symptoms can persist for at least 3 months. Anxiety or stress does not cause IBS but they can make symptoms of IBS worse.

The exact cause of IBS is not known. It is believed to be caused by sensitive intestinal system,  intestinal infection and abnormal activity of the muscles of the intestines and/or the nerves that control the muscles. This can lead to abnormal patterns of contraction of the intestinal muscles that result in pain, constipation, or diarrhea. Anxiety, stress and drugs can also induce IBS.

If you suffer from prolong diarrhea, constipation or abdominal pain for at least 3 months, had done an endoscopy and perhaps a series of other relevant test(s) and your doctors has excluded many other possibilities for your condition(s), it is likely that you have IBS.

When the symptoms of IBS are mild, they do not interfere with activities of daily life. When they are severe they may limit activities because of the pain or the need to go to the bathroom. Treatment for IBS is focused on improving the symptoms and elevating the quality of life.
Some foods may aggravate the symptoms of IBS because they alter the function of the intestinal muscles, allergen tests for food intolerance is also helpful in identifying foods that can cause IBS. Probiotics are frequently used to treat symptoms of IBS. Probiotics are generally safe so there is little harm in trying them.
If anxiety and stress is the trigger for IBS, psychotherapy and use of prescribed medication(s) can be an option to help improve the condition.
